John Deakin - Portrait of Francis Bacon, 1952
“I like my portrait of Francis Bacon enormously, perhaps because I like him so much and admire his strange, tormented painting. He’s an odd one, wonderfully tender and generous by nature, yet with curious streaks of cruelty, especially to his friends. I think that in this portrait I managed to capture something of the fear, which must underlie these contradictions of character”

Letter written by Emma Hauck to her husband while she was in a psychiatric hospital. The words ‘Sweetheart come’ (‘Herzensschatzi komm’), are written over and over filling the surface of the paper.
